Essential Oils for Babies

I was first introduced to doTERRA Essential Oils when my second born, Ryder was already one.

Man, I wish I had these bottles of plant magic when our first (Ella) was born! Looking back….we VERY MUCH NEEDED them! I was a young, nervy first-time Mum and a general-all-round-perfectionist. She was easily irritated, highly-strung, a terrible sleeper and had super sensitive skin. There were times when I was so desperate for a decent sleep or a ‘chilled out’ baby that I would buy into any and every product marketed my way. It was suggested to me that ‘Lavender’ would calm Ella and help her sleep better….so I stocked up on bottles of expensive ‘lavender scented bubble baths and baby lotions’ and bought lavender smelling toys and lit lavender-scented candles around the house each evening.

I cringe when I think back to what I was doing. Hindsight can be an eye-opener hey!? Little did I know, I was pumping our home and Ella’s little body with toxic fragrances and chemicals that were actually doing way more harm than good! And of course, because the lavender was synthetically made (not pure essential oil) it had no positive effect on her sleep or moods, so I wrote Lavender off as a sleep-support and declared it was a load of CRAP!!

I am now done in the baby making department (which is both heartbreaking & a relief at the same time), but if I was to have another delicious little baby enter our life, I would do things very differently. Reducing the toxic-load they’re exposed to would be high on my radar, and the products I used on & in their little body would mainly be derived from Mother Nature (aka: doTERRA).

(*Psstt….obviously there is an important & vital need for conventional medicine and I am not dissing that. However, as a Mum, I would be (and now am) very aware and vigilant of the self-care / body products I am using on my children in an attempt to reduce the toxins entering their body. This includes the air quality in our home and trying to remove as many synthetic fragrances as possible)

Ok, moving on…back to the post at hand! Using essential oils on your baby and/or children is a choice. I feel comfortable using them and have seen amazing results in both my kids and our home. In fact, doTERRA’s Lavender Oil has since transformed the whole family’s sleep in epic ways!!!!

The key to using Essential Oils (EO’s) topically (on skin) is to dilute! And when I say ‘dilute’, I am talking about mixing the EO with a carrier oil (such as Fractionated Coconut Oil or Jojoba Oil). If you want to learn more about all the ways you can use Essential Oils, please head here.

As for dilution ratios for babies and children, refer to this quick guide for a better understanding:

Use the above chart when making your own ‘Topical Blends’. I stock up on roller bottles (in both 5ml and 10ml sizes) I buy them off eBay and also love getting supplies from Diffusional.
